The original ex-military welfare organisation formed for the well-being, care, compensation and commemoration of serving and ex-service Defence Force members and their dependents, the Returned and Services League of Australia, was established in 1916.
Since then, there have been a large (and growing) number of welfare charities established essentially serving the same group of people, and even more formed to cater for police, fire and emergency services personnel – first responders.
