International Force East Timor Medal: The INTERFET Medal recognises members of the Australian Defence Force and certain others who served with INTERFET for at least 30 days. Uniquely for an Australian Medal, the award will also be made avaliable to members of coalition forces who served in the Australian-led operation. The medal has the image of a dove holding within its beak an olive branch overlaying a map of East Timor. Around the edge the words INTERNATIONAL FORCE EAST TIMOR.
The green of the ribbon represents the Army and regrowth of a new nation. The red is for the turbulent past of East Timor and the white represents tha Navy and for peace. The blue represents the Air Force and the sea. The Commonwealth or Federation Star which ensigns the medal symbolises that the force was led by Australia.
The medal has now been added by New Zealand issues to signify Kiwi active service in East Timor (Timor-Leste).
